To celebrate 15 years of culinary success, super-swish Chinese restaurant chain Hakkasan have launched a brand new menu. The Only At menu launched in Hakkasan restaurants around the world last October and features a selection of dishes exclusive to each location and inspired by the local culture. We visit top notch night-spot Hakkasan Doha to try out the newly appointed offering and taste the Arabic-inspired flavour sensations that arise from one of the world’s most revered restaurants.
Enter through a secret sliding door into the the restaurant that’s had Doha residents raving since day one. The immensely intimate space is separated with carved wooden, oriental screens and low-hung lamps set a mystifying, evening atmosphere that makes for the ultimate Instagram filter. The signature 10 metre blue, back-lit bar is packed with the city’s rich list; oil tycoons, property investors, magazine editors and royalty. The swanky Chinese hotspot is a hit across the city – be it for a celebratory dinner or a casual Thursday night cocktail.
Taking our seats at the bar, we can’t help but notice the sheer quantity of alcohols and liquors that decorate the bar. It’s perhaps the best bar in Doha. We pick from the cocktail list and within minutes a Raspberry Pearl is placed in front of us, alongside a glass pot of pistachios – which we promptly polish off along with our drinks.
We are shown to a corner table where we pour over the small, but varied menu. We are blown away by the presentation of the crispy boletus mushroom puff, shaped into a swan and suddenly taking an immediate photo seems like the most important task of the evening. The sweet taste of the boletus mushroom is sensational and makes us want to eat them all evening long. The spicy Wagyu beef salad was a treat – emphasis on the spicy but totally delicious.
For main course, we order pan-fry seam bream with a spicy sauce and stir-fry prawn with asparagus and angelica root. The dishes are served with jasmine rice and some healthy greens cooked in a savoury garlic sauce so good it’s hard to believe its good for you. The sea bream falls off the fork, succulent as can be and absolutely stunning in flavour. The spicy sauce isn’t for the faint-hearted but is a wonderful addition to an otherwise ordinary dish. The prawns are fresh out of the sea, large in quantity and delicious as ever.
The dessert menu is limited, but we find our happy place when we come across baked yogurt with raspberry and lychee. The reality is better than expected; sweet like a panna cotta with a raspberry and lychee gel, whole lychees and two meringue fingers. Our waiter recommends we also order a Raspberry Pearl cocktail to accompany the dessert. We are transported to a culinary heaven that we never want to return from, but sadly every dessert must come to an end and we had no problem in finishing that one off.
We couldn’t love Hakkasan Doha anymore than we do right now – I mean who doesn’t love being offered a pashmina by a waiter who says you look cold?! Go go go – and go now!
